I was told by a friend today that this phrase is no longer PC.

I was told to call it a 'mouth harp'. Other names for it include the 'jaw harp' or 'juice harp', which sounds like someone just changed the word to a similar sounding one, or 'trump' or 'lamellaphone' (though I think this refers to a class of instruments). I nicked these names off wikipedia, which has loads more - discussion of PC-ness at the discussion page.

'Jew's Harp' was an early term to stumble at the PC fence - as I remember it was being replaced by the similar sounding 'Jaw's Harp' in the 70s - though neither 'Jaw's Harp' nor 'Juice Harp' (!) have joined 'Jew's Harp' in my copy of Collin's Concise Dictionary.

Jews in popular prejudice are thought to be tight with money, and a Jew's Harp is a cheaper item than a celtic or classical harp. This etymology might be completely wrong, but it was what we believed and was enough to turn the PC spotlight on the name. If it had been called a Scottish Harp the name would probably have remained unscathed: the Scots might also have a reputation for parsimony (undeserved - consider how much money they piss up against the wall) but they've not suffered from pogroms because of it. But then they didn't kill Jesus*.

*The Italians should share this responsibility.

I've been busy of late (two month's worth of work left to do in the next couple of weeks…) but I had to get this illustration done, it's spot on. Ah, memories of the taste of wet metal and the thrill of it grating on your enamel!
