The lion's head as a trophy mounted on a plaque on the wall. Or the lion performing tricks in a circus, whipped into line by a lion tamer?

We've got plenty of opportunities to show off hunting - but few for circus acts and the exploitation of animals within them. Who could forget what happened to Dumbo after drinking that runoff cider? And what exactly was in it, anyway? More importantly, where can I get some?

You're right, young lad. In the circus it is. Now completed in the usual spot, perched uncomfortably on a plinth.

I've sketchy recollections of the film, but perhaps the cider was actually a wheat beer contaminated with ergot? There's a theory that some instances of mediaeval looniness were the result of a village tripping from the effects of the fungus, which can grow on the ears of wheat if there's damp weather before harvest. As I recall. Dangerous in excess - don't try this at home kids. Then again, the average C14th peasant was probably familiar with psychedelic experiences from the various psychoactive mushrooms growing in their woods and fields. Let's not imagine they were never tempted!

A visitor suggested that I coax the lion off his plinth and add a Union Jack backdrop, thus creating a stirring image of Great Britain and all that is Great British. I immediately came down with an attack of the patriotic collywobbles. Going up...
